John Cook Monument Rededication & Luncheon, October 4!

Mont Alto, Pa. – The Franklin County Historical Society – Kittochtinny will rededicate the Captain John E. Cook monument located on Park Street in Mont Alto, PA. The ceremony, sponsored by the Franklin County Historical Society, will be held at 11am, October 4, 2009 across from the Emmanuel Chapel in front of the campus of Penn State University, Mont Alto. The monument was installed in front of the chapel in 1909, by the historical society, formerly known as the Kittochtinny Historical Society, to honor John Cook, a member of John Brown’s Provisional Army, who escaped from Harpers Ferry and was caught in Mont Alto by slave catcher, Dan Logan. The event commemorates the 100th year anniversary of the monument and is part of the ongoing Quad-State 150th Commemoration of John Brown’s Raid. Following the October 4th rededication, Cynthia Goetz will portray, Kate, John Cook’s sister, during a dramatic presentation entitled, “Cooks Tale” and the event also includes a luncheon held at The Multi-purpose Rom, Penn State University, Mont Alto Campus. Reservations must be made in advance no later than September 28, 2009 by calling (717) 264-1667 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets are $14 per person. All proceeds benefit the Franklin County Historical Society-Kittochtinny, a non-profit 501c3 organization, housed in the Franklin County, PA Old Jail.
