50th Anniversary of Nellie Fox’s 1959 Baseball MVP Selection

nellie-foxBorn in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, Fox went on to play in the 1959 World Series for the Chicago White Sox. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1997.

Fox endures as one of the most popular and respected baseball players in American history. Jacob Nelson Fox was born on Christmas day 1927, in the village of St. Thomas, Pennsylvania. At the age of nineteen Fox broke into the major leagues when he joined the Philadelphia Athletics. Yogi Berra once said, “Nellie Fox, that little son of a gun, was always on base and was a great hit-and-run man. He sprayed hits all over.”

Fox’s many awards and accolades include the 1957, 1959, and 1960 Gold Glove Awards for Second basemen, and the 1959 Sporting News Player of the Year Award. Fox was voted an All-Star twelve times over the course of his career. The Chicago White Sox retired his number two uniform in honor of the man who was the first member of the White Sox team to be selected as the American League’s Most Valuable Player.
