The Franklin County Visitors Bureau and the Chambersburg Heritage Center are launching the 2010 Live & Learn Weekends on March 19-20. The first weekend centers around Inheriting The Trade by Thomas DeWolf. Inheriting The Trade is the result of DeWolf’s experiences as he and ten family members retraced their family history through the notorious triangle trade route and discovered that their ancestors were the most success slave-trading family in U.S. history, transporting over 10,000 Africans to America. The book is the memoir of his journey, feelings, and realizations.
Live & Learn Weekends are joint efforts of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and PA Tourism Office. Dr. Latonya Thames Taylor, professor of history at West Chester University and a Frederick Douglass Scholar, is returning to coordinate and facilitate the book discussions of the Franklin County Live & Learn Weekends.
The March Live & Learn Weekend starts on Friday, March 19, at 6 PM with a reception, followed by the discussion of Inheriting The Trade from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The weekend resumes at 9:00 AM in the auditorium of Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology on the campus of Wilson College. The morning will begin with a showing of Echoes of John Brown and be followed by Ted Alexander, speaking about the Confederate capture of African American citizens in Franklin County. Cost for Saturday is $10 for lunch. To receive the book and reserve your space, contact the Franklin County Visitors Bureau at 717-709-7204.
Two additional Live & Learn Weekend are scheduled for 2010–June 25-26: What This Cruel War Was Over by Chandra Manning and September 17-18: Slavery And The Making of America by James Horton.
