The 2012 Mommy & Me Art & Theatre Classes as part of the Creative Kids @ the Capitol program have started up again, according to the schedule below. These fun classes are open to children age 18 months to pre-Kindergarten. Merissa Vevasis of Shippensburg will once again be teaching the Mommy & Me classes …(or Daddy or Grandparent and Me!). Merissa holds a BA from Cedar Crest College in Allentown and specialized her art degree by combining art, psychology and education. She has worked with various programs and schools in PA and TN. As noted below, the Mommy & Me classes will take place on select Wednesday mornings from 10:00 – 10:45 (some classes may go until 11:00). No advance reservations are required at this time. Just show up promptly at 10:00 a.m. Participants can show up for one class, several classes or all the classes. The classes take place in the Wood Center on the second level of Capitol Theatre Center in Chambersburg. The cost per child per session is $5.00. The accompanying adult is free. Some of the classes have a minimal cost for supplies. No previous art experience is necessary! Capitol Theatre Center is located at 159 South Main Street in Chambersburg. Participants are asked to enter through the rear entrance off of East Washington Street. Mommy & Me Theatre & Art schedule of classes:
January 25th: Build a Snowman!
Create snow man art. We will also read stories about snowmen & play a fun snowman game.
February 1st: Groundhog Day
Will he see his shadow or not? Six more weeks of winter? What will this day bring?
February 8th: Heart Art!
Valentine painting & printmaking. We will read Valentine stories & sing songs about love!
February 15th: Penguin Parade!
We will read stories about penguins, create penguin art and have a penguin parade.
February 22nd: Polar Bear Party
We will read the story, “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you Hear?,” by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle. We will make Polar Bear masks and use creative drama to act out the story together.
February 29th: Happy Leap (Frog) Year!
In honor of leap year, our class will be all about frogs. We will make froggy art and leap around the Wood Center to help celebrate this special day!
March 7th: Let’s Go Make a Kite!
Let’s make some fancy kites that won’t blow away on a windy March day!
March 14th: Luck ‘O the Irish
You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We will go green as we make shamrock & leprechaun inspired art.
March 21st: Art Smarts for Spring (Georgia O’Keefe)
We will learn about American artist, Georgia O’Keefe, and paint big flower paintings to celebrate the arrival of spring!
March 28: Let’s Do the Bunny Hop!
We’ll make our own bunny ears, get our faces painted with a bunny nose and whiskers and hop and dance around to bunny songs.
April 4th: 2nd annual Mommy and Me “Easter Egg-stravaganza”!
Join us to decorate and dye eggs followed by a fun Easter egg hunt in the theatre.

More about Merissa Vevasis:
Merissa has taught both the visual and dramatic arts in a variety of educational and therapeutic settings. She has also taught children’s professional acting classes and creative drama classes to both children and adults. Merissa loves integrating art history into her visual art lessons and believes the process of creating art is a great form of therapy. In her own artwork, Merissa works with various mediums including painting, pastels and printmaking. She has an extensive theater background as well, including work in stage, television and voice over artistry. Merissa is excited to share her love for the visual and dramatic arts with the students of Creative Kids @ the Capitol.
