Cumberland Valley School of Music is offering a wide range of spring classes and private lessons, for students of all ages, at locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Hagerstown and Mercersburg. CVSM has a long-standing, professional faculty of 55 members, many certified in special music education programs, including classes for newborns to senior citizens. Spring programs include:
Musikgarten-All Together Now (newborns to 18 months)
This class offers parents and children musical opportunities for sharing time with one another. Activities include movement, dancing, singing, chanting and playing instruments. The classes are in a relaxed environment for families to come together to experience music.
Music Together (18 months to five years of age)
Basic music competence is developed as the child, parent and teacher experience the joy of “making music together.” Music Together classes are internationally recognized, believing all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence in the music of our culture.
Musikgarten- Cycle of Seasons (five to seven years old)
A musical celebration of the four seasons for parents and children. The class draws its central themes from nature and aims to bring the whole family into music and movement using an environmental experience of story-telling, sensory games, and call and respond song. Parents will learn how to tap into the child’s imagination, encouraging creative development and good listening skills.
Musical Kaleidoscope (four to five years old)
Children learn to sing, play instruments and move creatively while listening to classical music. This class, developed by educator Susan Whitelock, has run every semester at CVSM for 21 years. Musical Kaleidoscope provides a learning environment that is both enjoyable and developmentally appropriate.
Sing, Dance, Create!- (five to nine years old)
Children will spend time investigating relationships between music, creative movement, folk dance and the visual arts in this creative and playful class. Classes are a combination of teacher and self-directed activities of rhythm, listening and singing skills with hands-on fine art projects using art media and musical techniques.
Cumberbunds Children’s Chorus sings “Oliver!” (students in fourth through eighth grades)
The group will sing and perform the music from the Broadway Musical “Oliver.” Students interested in singing also learn simple choreography. Students receive instruction on breath control, diction, part singing and proper posture. The chorus also performs at a limited number of community events.

Participants learn improvisational techniques and creative thinking using theatre games and exercises, movement and improvised scenes. Acting/Theatre Improv classes are held at the CVSM location at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
